St. Peters was the first building on the Great Green of Maryborough, now called the Market Square, Portlaoise. It was completed in 1803, replacing the original St. Peter’s church at Tower Hill.  The design of the steeple and facade are attributed to James Gandon, the design being among his drawings in the National Gallery of Ireland.   It features stained glass windows by the famous Harry Clarke, and also has a window by his mentor, Alfred Ernest Child.

The clock was erected by the Rotary Club Portlaoise, as a millennium project
