The ruins of Aghaboe Abbey are in the middle of the south Laois countryside, on a bend in the road between Ballacolla and Borris-in-Ossory.    It seems quite literally to be in the middle of nowhere.  Where is the parish?  Where is the town?  Not even the usual pub?  This is quite at odds with its early history.   Originally the site of a monastery founded by St. Canice circa 576 A.D.  In keeping with Ireland’s reputation as a place of saints and scholars, Aghaboe Abbey was an important seat of learning and it is reported that at its height, it had a population of up to 8,000 people and had 52 paved streets
